NOSM U recruits health care professionals for faculty appointments, instructional and preceptor positions, based on need in specific areas. The curricula in NOSM U programs are premised on the philosophy of high quality, innovative education delivered in a variety of formats and settings.

Specific roles vary by program. Throughout this application the word "faculty member" is used to encompass various roles, such as preceptor, clinical educator, tutor, facilitator, and instructor. The word "instruct" is meant to include precept, educate, tutor, and facilitate.

Members of NOSM U's Division of Clinical Sciences are typically regulated health care professionals who practice in settings where learners learn. Faculty members:

· provide opportunities for observation and the development of skills based on learning objectives;

· aid learners in the development of critical thinking and self-directed learning skills;

· act as a resource during learner placements; and

· showcase practice in Northern Ontario as a viable and attractive future practice consideration.

Criteria:

1. Licensed health care professional in good standing with their regulatory College (where applicable).

2. Qualified to assist the learner in meeting learning objectives.

3. Approved by Clinical Sciences Division Head according to experience and educational expertise.

General Responsibilities:

1. Become familiar with the disciplinary competencies and the learner's individual learning objectives.

2. With the learner, determine and arrange learning experiences that will help them meet their competencies and personal learning objectives.

3. Provide the University with a list of skills and/or procedures that the learner may observe or perform and specify which may require some advance preparation.

4. Orient the learner to the practice environment's personnel, physical facilities, policies, and procedures.

5. Assume supervisory responsibility for the learner's performance while on placement.

6. Provide periodic and timely written assessments of the learner's progress in meeting competencies and/or learning objectives and the learner's behaviour and responsibility in demonstrating a professional commitment to patients, staff, the faculty member, and the practice setting.

7. Maintain verbal and/or written communication with a designated University faculty or staff member.

8. Assist the learner in becoming acquainted with the people and activities of the community.

Note: Within the undergraduate medical education (UME) program, postgraduate medical education (PGME) or residency programs, and the physician assistant program, a NOSM University faculty appointment is required in order to formally assess a learner.
